Social & Emotional Wellbeing
General:
The SEWB team have provided support to the communities across the Goondir Service region who have increasing rise to cost of living, non-existent affordable housing options, natural disasters and
unforeseen traumatic events. There has been a significant increase in demand for social and emotional wellbeing services across the service region and the SEWB team exceeded the target of supporting
200 clients during 2022/2023.
The Goondir Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) team consists of three staff, one of each based in Dalby, Oakey and St. George. The SEWB team provide support and healing through strengths based, culturally safe, trauma and healing informed approaches.
The Gira Gira Women participated in an information session hosted by Link-Up Brisbane.
The SEWB team focus on strengthening Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and
communities through healing activities and supports. Through developing empowerment skills, building
resilience and focusing on health and wellbeing, the SEWB team are working in collaboration with the clients to develop strategies to address the impacts of current, past and intergenerational trauma, dispossession, separation of families, social disadvantage, racism and other historical, social and cultural issues that impact on wellbeing. The SEWB team implement various evidence-based approaches to enhance social and wellbeing, leading to clients experiencing increased education and employment opportunities, reduction in substance misuse, violence and contact with the criminal justice system.
The SEWB team conducted sessions focusing on social and
emotional wellbeing for 33 trainees and apprentices participating
in the Harness Energy Indigenous Pathways Program.
Stolen Generation
The Stolen Generation refers to the systematic removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities. From 1883 to the early 1970’s an estimated 100,000 Indigenous children were forcibly removed (for more information please refer to the Bringing Them Home Report).
Effects relating to the Stolen Generation include:
- Insecurity and lack of self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness
- Depression and suicide
- Delinquency and violence sometimes leading to imprisonment
- Alcohol and drug abuse and/or
- Lack of trust and intimacy
Goondir has Counsellors who are able to address a full range of emotional and social problems endured by survivors of the Stolen Generation and their families.
Mental Health
Good mental emotional health is a vital part of overall good health and wellbeing. It is just as important to maintain good mental health as it is to maintain good physical health. The Mental Health Counsellor is responsible for providing assessment, case management, referral and follow-up for clients seeking assistance with mental emotional issues. Episodes of mental emotional unwellness can come and go in periods throughout people’s lives. The Mental Health Counsellor can assist you to understand your personal and emotional issue/s and help to ease the pain and discomfort that these issues can cause. This may involve brief interventions, counselling, initiating and managing planned treatment options, consultation and referral to other agencies or crisis management.
Substance Misuse Worker
The Substance Misuse Worker addresses issues and challenges that are faced by clients with drug and alcohol issues and understands the importance of harm minimisation and advocacy for an often marginalised client group.
Dalby Emergency Relief - Emergency Relief is available to provide financial support to clients on every Wednesday from 9am – 12pm .
Dalby GIRA GIRA Indigenous Women's Sewing Groups<br /> The sewing group is held every Tuesday at Bungeeba from 10am – 2pm.
Goondir Counselling Services ensures professional counselling/support services are made available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Counsellors/Workers provide:
